1. What is Gerry's Vocabulary Teacher?

Gerry's Vocabulary Teacher is a simple database program intended for language teachers. It enables you to create and store word lists with an associated set of example sentences for each word, and the example sentences can be used to create a variety of different gapfill exercises for printing or completion on the Web. It is distributed with Gerry Luton's original database, which consists of over 2600 headwords and 50,000 sentences for learners of English. The database is provided in three forms: British, Canadian and American English.

During installation, all three of these databases are copied into the Program Folder, and the one you choose during install is also copied into a folder within your "My Documents" folder, called "gerryvoc". This becomes the default database which is loaded when the program is run.

For PCs, Gerry's Vocabulary Teacher runs on Windows 95, 98, ME, NT4, 2000, XP, Vista and Window 7. and Vista.
For Macs, Gerry's Vocabulary Teacher runs on OSX 10.6 at a minimum.

2. Upgrading from previous versions

You can simply install the new version over the old version. However, you will then need to contact us at gerry@cpr4esl.com to receive a new key to register the software. Upon confirmation of your original purchase, we will send you an updated username and registration key free of charge.

When the program starts up, it may offer to merge the new version of the database with your old version. This process can take some time to accomplish. If you have made changes to the old database, by adding or changing sentences, or by marking used sentences, you may choose to merge the databases so that you can retain your changes but also get the benefit of all the new sentences and headwords. If you have not made any changes to the database, simply load the new database instead of the old one when the program starts up for the first time. Bear in mind that if you previously used (for example) a British English version of the database, if you then choose the American English version in the installer, and merge the two, you will end up with a database which has sentences in both forms in it.

3. Shareware Distribution

Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software before buying it. Gerry's Vocabulary Teacher is distributed as a "light" freeware version which will allow you to work with headwords from the first half of the alphabet. If you want to use the whole alphabet, or create output using more than five sentences, you will have to register the program (see below).

Copyright laws apply to both shareware and retail software, and the copyright holder retains all rights.

6. Installation

Gerry's Vocabulary Teacher is distributed on the WWW as a self-extracting zip file (gerryvocxx.exe, where "xx" is the version number). Simply copy the file into an empty directory and run it. The program files will be extracted. Then, to install the program, run "setup_gvt_xxxx.exe" ("xxxx" is the detailed version information). An icon will be added to the Start menu. Installation will copy all of the files to Gerry's Vocabulary Database's own folder. It will also copy the database version you select (British, Canadian or American English) into a folder called "gerryvoc" inside your My Documents folder.

If you need to install the program on a computer which is part of a Security Domain, please ask a Domain Administrator to help you.

Gerry's Vocabulary Teacher includes a full uninstall program. To remove the program from your system, use the Add/Remove Programs applet in the Windows Control Panel. After running the uninstaller, you will also need to remove the "gerryvoc" folder inside your My Documents folder, to completely remove all files from your system. The "gerryvoc" folder inside the My Documents folder is your own copy of the database, including all your changes, so the uninstaller does not remove it.
